Diana, Princess of Wales, was the youngest of three daughters of the 8th Earl Spencer. Her younger (and only surviving) brother, Charles, succeeded their father in 1992 as the 9th Earl. (The 8th Earl's first son, John, was born in 1960 – 18 months before Diana – but died within 12 hours of his birth.)
